Year 6 celebrate exam success
Exceptional entrance exam success for St. Mary’s pupils
St. Mary’s Year 6 pupils have all succeeded in securing a place in their secondary school of choice, having sat highly competitive entrance exams for independent schools such as Abingdon, The Abbey, Reading Blue Coat School, St. Helen and St.Katharine and Magdalen College School Oxford. 14 pupils collected a total of 12 scholarships and awards including academic, drama, music and sport and were also successful in the 11+ exam with places offered from William Borlase and John Hampden School.
St Mary’s is a fully co-ed preparatory school set in the heart of Henley on Thames for children from nursery through to year 6. The school prides itself on offering academic excellence and a nurturing approach, as a St. Mary’s parent recently commented, ‘St. Mary’s succeeds academically without resorting to being a hot house’.
Rob Harmer, St. Mary’s Head Master congratulated the children on their success, saying:
‘We are very proud of our Year 6 pupils and the mature attitudes they have displayed whilst seeking out their next schools. They have worked very hard, with the support of our dedicated teachers and have stayed calm during moments of pressure. They really have done exceptionally well. Our strong links with secondary schools in the area ensure that we can help boys and girls move to a school that is best suited to them and where they will thrive’.
St. Mary’s fully supports children through the process of deciding which school to move onto. This process starts as early as Year 4 when parents meet with Rob Harmer, Headmaster for initial discussions about the best destinations for a child, based on their academic ability, strengths and character. Early morning exam clubs are then offered to help prepare for the 11+ test and selective examinations and interviews.
The Year 6 pupils have secured places at a number of excellent schools including Abingdon, Reading Blue Coat School, Shiplake College, Magdalen College Oxford, Leighton Park, Cranford House, The Abbey School, Queen Anne’s, St. Helen and St. Katharine, Moulsford and St.Joseph’s College.
