Science

Young children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. Our science teaching aims to encourage their interest and develop the skills they need to observe, make predictions, test their ideas and explain how things work. Science lessons are hands-on, practical experiences, with the emphasis on discussion and sharing ideas to help to develop the understanding of everyone in the group.

Science lessons are timetabled from Year 1 and from year 3 they are taught in our purpose built, well equipped laboratory. Each term, topics are chosen which encompass the requirements of the National Curriculum. Careful observation, measurement, handling of scientific apparatus and recording of results are encouraged from an early age. As the children develop, we introduce the concept of a "Fair Test" and encourage them to devise their own way of answering a scientific question. They then evaluate their results and explain them using the science they have learned. Pupils are encouraged to carry out much of their practical work independently, either on their own or as part of a small group, which helps boost their self-confidence.

During their time at St Mary's we aim to develop the skills and abilities of each child, laying down a firm foundation for his or her future science education. We hope that they take with them an interest and enthusiasm for science and continue to see it as a relevant, accessibe and enjoyable part of life.
