P.S.H.R.E
The imparting of religious knowledge is an important part of education. Knowledge of our own and other religions and cultural traditions is essential in order to foster understanding, respect and tolerance within our society. These aspects of R.E. are taught within the humanities syllabus, the P.S.H.R.E. lessons and in our assemblies.
Assemblies are held twice a week and include opportunities for the children to discuss relevant moral and social issues in an accepting atmosphere so that they are able to come to an understanding of their own beliefs. They are valuable in fostering a sense of community and help to promote a shared responsibility and code of behaviour within the school. Assemblies also allow the children to experience a quiet time, to reflect on their own hopes and ideas. We take great care to ensure that we always respect and support individual families' religious beliefs and do not impose any of our own on the children. St. Mary's is a non-denominational school.
In years 4, 5 and 6 the children embark on a P. S. H. R. E. programme. This course includes the study of Christianity and world religions; current affairs, debating and life skills. It also provides a forum for the children to discuss social and moral issues which they themselves have raised.
Sex and health education is covered as an integral part of the science syllabus in year six. Parents are fully informed of the content of this course and are given the opportunity to discuss the programme before the teaching begins.
