U8 7 a side Tag Rugby V St Edwards School
Posted on 13 January 2012It was their first school tag rugby match for all the children who played today against St. Edwards and it was a closely fought encounter. The home team thought they had taken an early lead but the try was disallowed for not grounding the ball properly. St. Mary’s pushed forward and Lachlan Nye made some good ground up the field. Off-loading the ball to Morgan Phillips he danced through the St. Edwards’ defence to score a brilliant try. St. Edwards responded quickly and brought the scores level as they broke through our defensive line. The second try for St. Mary’s was again scored by Morgan Phillips as he received the ball from Sam Groom and took advantage of a gap in the St. Edwards’ defence and drove on towards the line. St. Mary’s went three tries to one up when Morgan Phillips supported Lachlan Nye who had nearly made it to the try line only to be tackled at the last gasp but Morgan was there to receive the ball and step over. St. Edwards responded well and brought the scores level with some good support play and running off the ball. Jamie Mclellan was defending well, as was Nicholas Wiegandt and Sophie Triptree, grabbing tags and keeping a good strong line. St. Edwards then went into the lead due to some knock-ons by St. Mary’s which resulted in us losing possession. St. Mary’s though managed to bring the scores level at half time with a well deserved try by Matthew Grundy who supported Nicholas Wiegandt and was there to take the pass and run on to make the try. In the second half the team lost their concentration a little and St. Edwards took a three try lead. A fourth try by Morgan Phillips brought the score to 7-5 and a late try by Sophie Triptree who was supported by Lucy Hucker saw St. Mary’s finish second best with St. Edwards finishing the game with a score of 9 tries to 6. The boys and girls should be very proud of their achievement as everyone contributed and made great progress, improving their game no end! Well done!
