Sports for Schools event with Rion Pierre
Posted on 24 January 2012St. Mary’s School pupils were visited on Tuesday 24th January by Rion Pierre, a potential Olympic 100m, 200m and 4 x100m relay sprinter. Rion visited the school on Tuesday 24th January to host a Sports for Schools assembly. He talked about how important it was to eat fruit and vegetables, the importance of exercise, and the need to think positive and always try your best. Rion went through some of his warm up drills with the children as well as putting the children through a gruelling sponsored workout. The children and some of the staff then had an opportunity to race him! Rion has now completed his course in Biomechanics at Brunel University achieving a first class degree. Throughout his time at Brunel he has continued to train for his athletics but unfortunately missed out on competing in the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games because of injury. Rion is coached and mentored by Linford Christie who believes that Rion’s determination, dedication and talent will enable him to become one of the world’s fastest sprinters. It was a truly inspirational afternoon for the children and hopefully later this year some of them will be able to say they beat an Olympic medalist!
