Games and Gym
St. Mary's offers a wide variety of sporting opportunity. The school minibus is used to enable all the children to take part in games sessions at local venues. The school has regular access to a floodlit all weather pitch, tennis courts and athletics pitch and we use an indoor training pool for weekly swimming for our infants.
Our school hall is well equipped with wall bars, ropes and free standing gymnastic equipment. Each week, all children from Nursery age have a gymnastic lesson with activities designed to develop body awareness, balance and co-ordination.
One further lesson per week is devoted to practising ball skills and competitive team games. For children in Year 2 and above this lesson is held off site and a choice of activity is often offered with the aim of developing skills in football, tag rugby, cricket, rounders, hockey and netball.
In year 2 a further games lesson per week is allocated to swimming. For other year groups this will be a session of tennis, swimming, dance or athletics to provide variety.
The three lengthy games lessons per week are supplemented by the after school sports clubs which most of the older children attend on a regular basis.
