Design and Technology

This area of the curriculum combines craft work with scientific and mathematical knowledge.  Through design and technology children tackle practical problems to produce models which apply cross curriculum skills.  In this way children learn how to combine ideas with knowledge.

At St. Mary's emphasis is placed on the problem solving nature of this subject and children are encouraged to find answers to set challenges, often chosen to support ideas being investigated in science.  No high-tech equipment needs to be used as it is amazing what can be made with wood, cardboard, simple electrical circuits and glue.  Working out which materials to use and how to use them are some of the problems that have to be solved.  As far as possible the children are encouraged to work with their own ideas, perhaps discussing them with the teacher or others in the group to help clarify how to tackle the tasks set, but generally arriving at a finished product they have designed and made.  Throughout the manufacturing stage, the children are encouraged to reflect upon the suitability of their original design and make modifications where necessary.

On completion of the project the children evaluate their work and realise a great sense of achievement in their finished product, together with a recognition that their solution may be just as valid as the next person's.
