Assessment and Examinations
Children's work is assessed regularly throughout the year. In particular, in English, regular tasks are set which the children complete unaided. These are used to set targets for the group and individual targets for each child. Standardised tests in reading and spelling are undertaken throughout the child's career. Results are available for discussion at parents' interviews. Cognitive testing takes place in the Spring term of years four and five and the results of these tests are discussed with parents with a view to assisting with secondary school selection.
All our schemes of work encompass the requirements for Common Entrance and the National Curriculum. We aim to ensure that the children have covered the syllabus well in advance of any entrance examinations. In the term prior to external examinations, the children have plenty of opportunity to practise their exam technique and develop an awareness of the need for speed. Practice in verbal reasoning is offered as an after school activity for children in years 5 and 6.
Standardised reading tests begin during year one and standardised spelling tests during year two. Both these continue annually. National Standard Assessment Tests are conducted at the end of year 2 and Year 6.
